On Thursday, September 5th, the Skygate Car Park at Brisbane Airport was transformed into a beacon of unity and hope as we hosted the 2024 Live Like Her Challenge. With over 400 participants joining us, the Live Like Her Challenge was more than just a gathering; it was a profound demonstration of our collective commitment to supporting women over 55 who are experiencing homelessness.
The evening was both moving and inspiring. We were deeply touched by the sight of so many people coming together with a shared purpose to uplift those who are often overlooked in our society. This event illuminated the real-life struggles faced by these women—who could be our mothers, sisters, or friends—and reinforced the urgent need for continued support.
The night began with a heartfelt Welcome to Country delivered by Waveney Yasso, a proud Yuwi Burra and South Sea Island descendant who calls Meanjin home. Waveney, known for her dedication to preserving language, songlines, and history through her art, offered a performance that was both breath taking and deeply moving. Her Welcome to Country and song set a powerful tone for the evening, profoundly reminding us of the deep connection we share with each other and with the land.
Nina, Lady Mayoress of Brisbane and Chair of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust, perfectly captured the essence of the night with her powerful words: “Together tonight we have sent them a very, very strong confirmation of their value to our society—that we see them, that we love them, that we care for them, and we don’t want this for them.” Our CEO, Teresa, also shared a touching reminder of the impact we can make: “Sometimes you can see that a little amount can make such a huge difference.”
We are thrilled to announce that, thanks to the generosity and support of everyone involved, we raised an incredible $325,000. This achievement not only underscores the success of the event but also highlights the profound impact we can make when we come together for a common cause. The funds raised will directly support initiatives solely designed to provide essential services, stable and safe housing, to older women who are experiencing homelessness, making a crucial difference in their lives.
A special thank you goes to Brisbane Airport Corporation, our Platinum Sponsor, whose support was instrumental in making this event possible. We are also deeply grateful to our Gold, Silver, and Bronze Sponsors for their invaluable contributions. Your partnership and generosity helped us reach new heights and bring our vision to life.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Your enthusiasm and hard work were essential to the smooth running of the event and were deeply appreciated.
To everyone who attended and donated, we also offer our sincere thanks. Your presence and contributions were crucial to the success of this event, and we couldn’t have achieved this without your support.
As we look forward to the future, we are excited about the possibilities for next year and beyond. We hope to build on this success and make an even greater impact in the years to come. Stay connected with us for updates on future events and opportunities to get involved. Thank you once again to all our supporters; together, we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of older women in need.
